World War II began however, and he enlisted in the Air Force. After achieving the rank of lieutenant he was trained as a bombardier assigned to the 11th Air Force, 404th bomb squadron stationed in the Aleutian Islands. Alex completed 32 missions and was awarded the Air Medal and Distinguished Flying Cross. Following WWII he attended Temple University where his interests turned to television broadcasting. He worked at NBC, and then moved to RCA in Camden, NJ where he was involved in research and development. His team developed the first portable video camera. His dream, however, was to pursue a career in video tape production. He established Tel-Fax, the first video mobile unit in the country. Following Tel-Fax he became the chief engineer at Channel 29 in Jenkintown, PA. There he met his future partner, Herb Bass. Together they started United Video with studios in New York City and post-production facilities in Pittsburgh and Hollywood. They also developed one of the largest mobile video operations in the country. Their accomplishments were numerous and their productions included MTV, Family Ties, Sesame Street, and Live from Lincoln Center for which they received five Emmy Awards. His retirement was filled with the joys of family, numerous friends, and of course golf. His greatest passion however was for his loving family and for the love of his life, his wife of 72 years, Zelda. Services are entrusted to Alexander-Levitt Funerals & Cremations, 8135 W.
