Abram Gavcovich's Obituary
Abram Gavcovich—also known as Abe, General Cavalier, Papi, and Zeide—was born in Havana, Cuba to Samuel and Toibe where he fell in love with Marta, his Mushele, and made lifelong friends. He moved his family to New York with only a dime and Marta’s engagement ring hidden in his shoe. There, they had their daughter Fannie, but settled in Miami soon after where they welcomed their son Jerry. He was successful in the clothing store business, due in large part to his wit but also his charisma and attention to detail. Wanting for little besides family, friends, and travel, he was able to retire in his early 50s. His family grew with his son-in-law, Carlos, and daughter-in-law, Lois; his grandchildren came soon after: Jenna, Brandon (Janine), Tara (Jordan), and Amanda. With friends, he traveled the world by cruise and planes. He welcomed every Shabbat, New Year, and celebration big and small with his family. He could make friends with anyone but remained a devoted friend; Abram was magnetic, stubborn, and sophisticated (never a hair out of place), but a family man—a mensch— above all else. More recently, he became a great-grandfather to Samuel, Emilia, Hanna, Jack, and Gabriella, which brought him endless smiles. His still-growing family was anchored by his adoring, 63 year long marriage to Marta. His family will miss his advice, his deep and booming voice, how he felt our successes as his own, how he did everything his way, and his love. The family requests donations be made in memory of Abram Gavcovich to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, www.stjude.org. Chapel Service will be held Monday, June 3, 2024 at 1:30 p.m. at Levitt-Weinstein Blasberg-Rubin-Zilbert Memorial Chapel, 18840 W. Dixie Highway, North Miami Beach, Florida 33180 (305) 932-2700.
