Alvin Bakst's Obituary
BAKST
Alvin passed away suddenly on Monday, February 24, 2014. He was born in NYC on Jan. 31st, 1934 and moved to Miami Beach in 1946 at the age of 12, where he met the love of his life, Joan, in the 6th grade. They started going steady then and never stopped. They married over 58 years ago after he returned from serving his country in Korea. Al was a pioneer in the food industry for over 60 years. He opened his first restaurant, Stephen’s West, in Hialeah in 1963. His business grew with the launch of Bakst Catering, a highly regarded society caterer, and culminated with his crowning restaurant achievement, Tuttle’s, a supper club on the Bay in Miami. At the time of his death, Al was a mentor advising future restaurateurs for SCORE, a nonprofit association dedicated to helping small businesses get off the ground. Al is survived by his loving wife, Joan, daughter and son-in-law, Mindy and Marty Schlosberg, sons Mitchell and Andrew Bakst, and grandsons Eric and Jake Schlosberg. Al was the ultimate family man, putting the needs, aspirations and wishes of his family above all else. We will miss him forever. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Memorial Breast Cancer Institute. Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 27th at Levitt-Weinstein Memorial Chapel, 18840 West Dixie Highway, North Miami Beach, FL 33180.
