Arlene Glick
February 11, 1934 – September 18, 2023
Arlene Glick, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother passed away on September 18, 2023, at the age of 89. Arlene Glick (nee Feinberg) was born in Boston, Massachusetts on February 11, 1934. Arlene lived a fulfilled and accomplished life. She was loved and admired by all the lives she touched.
On October 2, 1952, Arlene married the love of her life, Harvey Glick, in their hometown of Boston, MA. As teenagers they met at Nantasket Beach, MA and remained in a loving 70-year marriage. Arlene is survived by her son Michael and his wife Mary, daughter Laura and her husband Walter. Arlene is also survived by seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren: Michael and Mary’s children Melissa, David and spouse Phachphicha (‘Bee’) and their two children Lanna and Louis, Justin, Steven, and Jennifer and her daughter Arlo; Laura and Walter’s children Rachel and Robyn and her daughter Adeline. Additionally, Arlene is survived by her sister Norma Neiman and brother Mark Feinberg, many relatives and lifetime friends. Arlene was preceded in death by her husband Harvey, and her parents Michael and Rose ‘Ruth’ Feinberg.
From her early years, Arlene excelled in education and was drawn to the arts. She was a straight ‘A’ student with a particular love for languages. Studying Latin and French throughout high school, by her senior year, Arlene was reading full length novels in their original text. Reading and translating Les Misérables was her French class capstone project. Though busy with school life, Arlene’s passion was performing. She received vocal training from her first cousin, recording artist Teddi King. With her beautiful singing voice and exotic beauty, Arlene began a professional career in the music industry, performing in night clubs. At the age of sixteen, Arlene met professional musician Harvey, and they were inseparable for a lifetime.
Soon after saying “I Do,” Arlene and Harvey began raising their family. Consistent with her nature, Arlene instilled in her two children a love for learning and the self confidence to achieve their own personal goals. Weekly trips to the library, dance classes, piano lessons, and games to challenge critical thinking skills permeated their home. Arlene’s true gift was creating a fun and light-hearted atmosphere while helping her children mature to their fullest potential. Neighborhood friends also benefited from the home environment Arlene promoted by gathering around the piano for sing-alongs and engaging in jigsaw puzzles, scrabble, password, and other games. Always warm, welcoming, and encouraging, Arlene made it comfortable for everyone to contribute and participate. She made her home the place everyone wanted to visit and enjoy.
Reflective of her personality, bridge became a source of great enjoyment for Arlene, who played the game adroitly for over six decades. A strong leader and active supporter of the schools her children attended, Arlene was voted president of Crestview Elementary PTA. These outlets resulted in many friendships while stimulating her love for mental challenges.
Arlene’s devotion to her family provided the foundation for their happy home life and when her son began his college studies, she realized the time had arrived to begin her long delayed dream of pursuing a degree in education. She graduated from Florida International University with honors. She then began the next phase of her life’s journey, a 20-year teaching career at Scott Lake Elementary school. In addition to her responsibilities as a classroom teacher, Arlene directed annual school musical performances, gaining special recognition which culminated in being awarded ‘Teacher of the Year.’ Loved by her students, many stayed in touch with Arlene long after they had left the classroom.
Arlene and Harvey enjoyed many travels, including annual drives with their children to visit family and relatives in Boston. In addition to touring Europe, Canada, and the Caribbean Islands, Arlene and Harvey especially cherished their travels to all 50 states.
Given her creative nature, Arlene developed a means to continue her deep love for performing. She made every gathering for birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, and bar mitzvahs truly memorable by selecting the perfect song, personalizing the words to fit the occasion, then with love, serenading the honored guest or couple.
Arlene’s reward for a ‘life well lived’ were her seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. They were all graced with her love and enthusiasm for engaging in activities that were fun while promoting learning. For the grandchildren living in North Carolina and Oklahoma, the best part of the year was when grandma and grandpa made each child feel like the ‘star’ when it was their turn to have an overnight in the motel or a special trip to Disneyworld.
Arlene had a beautiful love and devotion to family and friends. It was through her loving relationships with her husband, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren that Arlene found her greatest happiness. Arlene will be in our hearts forever more.
