Arnold "Al" Lewis Scheinberg's Obituary
SCHEINBERG
February 17, 1918 to April 12, 2016
Arnold “Al” Lewis Scheinberg of Boca Raton passed gently in his sleep after a brief illness.
Born in the Bronx, NY Arnold began working in the late 1930s as an assembler for Emerson Radio & Television where after 42 years he rose through the ranks to become Vice President of Sales. Subsequently Al joined Morse Electronics as a key account sales manager and was eventually offered the Presidency which he turned down for personal reasons.
Al displayed equal capability in his military service where after enlisting in the Army Signal Corps in 1941 and serving in the South Pacific he reached the field rank of Major and permanent rank of Captain. After choosing to return home in 1945 he married his childhood sweetheart Mildred who predeceased him in 1986.
Arnold lived a full and wonderful life and was a gentle, giving man who was known for his compassion, sense of humor and common sense wisdom. His only failure in life appears to be his inability to stay retired and he actually never stopped working until taking ill at age 98. Even after retiring from Morse Electrophonic Al took a part time job at UPS in 1982 where after 13 years he rose from being a clerk to being a part time manager. After leaving UPS and moving to Florida Al joined his son Steven in a business venture in Florida from which he retired in 1986.
However, it was after his stint in the food business that Al found his greatest satisfaction which was serving as a volunteer for the Boca Raton Police Department where he was assignment to Boca’s 911 unit and worked, almost full-time, until falling ill. Al loved his 911 friends and co-workers as if they were family and they loved him back inviting him to celebrate family events and holidays, Bowl games and other special dates with them. His success as a volunteer was recognized in 2013 when The National Emergency Management Association (NEMA) voted him their National Volunteer of the Year and President Obama sent him a letter congratulating him on his service. Then, in 2015 another honor was bestowed on Al when he was invited to participate in the Honor Flight Program for veterans.
During the past few years Al was an avid commentator on Facebook and Twitter offering his liberal perspectives of social policy and electoral politics. His passing triggered an avalanche of comments from hundreds of well-wishers who never met him but loved his unusual perspectives and witty insights.
His family loved and cherished Al who was known to them as Poppy Al and he was doted on by all of them who regularly called and visited. Poppy Al was exceedingly proud of his sons Barry and Steven Scheinberg; his daughter in law, Christine Chipman, his grandchildren and their spouses, Adam and Jennifer Scheinberg, Robin and Brett Magnuson, Michael, Andrew and Rachel Scheinberg and his three great-grandchildren, Jillian and Jack Scheinberg and Shane Magnuson.
A Memorial Service in Boca Raton will be announced for his friends and family in the near future.
