SIMMONSDr. Bernard Joseph of Aventura, formerly of Philadelphia, PA, passed away December 16, 2011. Beloved husband of Lenore Toby-Simmons, loving father of Albert (Jennifer) Simmons & Jill (Bart) Blatstein, dear brother of Hilda Gibbs, cherished grandfather of Ryan Blatstein, Jenna Goldman, Hailey, Courtney, Andrew & William Simmons. Dr. Bernard Simmons was an extraordinary man, much beloved and famed for his brilliance as a physician as well as his major philanthropy. He and & Lenore are arts activists & cultural supporters in the South Florida community. Dr. Simmons practiced medicine in Philadelphia for over 40 years. He was a founding member of the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame. He was the eye doctor for the Philadelphia Eagles, 76ers, Philadelphia Phillies & all the parochial schools in Philadelphia. Dr. Simmons received the American Legion Award, Maxwell Club Award & Villanova Sports Hall of Fame. He was a founding member of the American Friends of Ben-Gurion University in Israel & was the Aventura Chairman for Shaare Zadek Hospital in Jerusalem. He traveled to Israel over 30 times. He was a major supporter of the Diabetes Research Institute at the University of Miami, American Friends of Mogen David Adom-Israel’s emergency medical, blood, and disaster ambulance service. He was past president of Alternative Cancer Therapy in Philadelphia, PA. The family requests donations in memory of Dr. Bernard Simmons to Citizens Interested in Arts, P.O.
