Bernice Frankel's Obituary
FRANKELBernice , A spirited, artistic, independent and fiercely family-oriented mother, grandmother and great- grandmother, Bernice Frankel died Tuesday at the age of 86. A survivor of the Great Depression, she was born and raised in Chicago where her parents owned a dry goods store. As a young woman she worked for the family business before eventually moving to Washington DC to work for the US Government in the early 40’s. In 1944, while back in her home city and at a synagogue, she met Polish Holocaust survivor, Sol Frankel, whom she would marry. The couple had three children. The Frankel family moved to Bay Harbor Island, FL in 1952, and it was there where this consummate family woman raised children, embraced art and contributed to charity. Traveling the world was also a passion. A study trip to Pietrasantra, Italy helped shape her painting and sculpting abilities under artist Enzo Gallo. With her husband, she was a founder of the University of Miami Comprehensive Cancer Center and Mount Sinai Medical Center, as well as an avid supporter of other charities such as Greater Miami Jewish Federation & The State of Israel Bonds. She lovingly encouraged and assisted her children and grandchildren before and during their professional careers. Bernice was the dear wife of the late Sol Frankel, beloved mother of Marjorie Frankel Robbins, Markus (Cynthia) Frankel, Janice Frankel (Barry) Silver, cherished grandmother of Sheldon Frankel, Jessica Robbins (Greg) Marino, Bradley Frankel, Lauren, Samantha and Courtney Silver, adored great-granddaughters Zari and Alexa Marino.
