Bernyce "Bunny" Adler's Obituary
Bernyce Adler Obituary
Adler, Bernyce (Bunny) Shinensky passed away peacefully in her home in Miami, Florida surrounded by her family. Bunny was passionate about her family, friends and the numerous organizations and causes she supported. Her generosity and compassion left its mark on her community and inspired her family to continue her legacy of activism. Born in Brooklyn, New York on April 17, 1924 to Samuel and Ruth (Harris) Shinensky, Bunny attended New York City public schools where she met her beloved husband Samuel I. Adler (deceased) when they were in junior high school. Bunny and Sam married and began their family shortly after WWII when Sam returned from the South Pacific in his dashing US Army Air Corps pilot uniform.
After moving to Miami Beach in 1959, Bunny and Sam quickly became devoted advocates of the community’s emerging cultural and philanthropic institutions. As a life member of the Board of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation, Bunny was a leader and chair of numerous committees and projects. As one of the longest serving members of the Woman’s Board of the Jewish Federations of North America she is credited with bringing the Lion of Judah recognition program to communities around the world.
For many years, Bunny was a member of the Board of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, Board of Trustees of the University of Miami and the Dade County Public Health Trust. In 1994, President Clinton appointed her to the Commission for the Preservation of American Heritage Abroad. Bunny was enthusiastic about electing progressive political candidates to public office; a passion she lovingly passed on to her children. Bunny was an avid supporter of the arts and particularly passionate about women artists.
She is survived by her children Karen (Larry Greenwald), Michael (Judy), and Sara (Eliot Abbott) as well as her grandchildren Matthew (Amanda), David, Rachel (Alexander), Jonathan (Laura), Daniel (Jaimie), Marc (Diane), Eric (Melanie) and thirteen great-grandchildren.
The family is thankful to Patricia Gadoy for the loving care and devotion she has given for more than 20 years to our mother and grandmother.
Donations in her memory can be made to the Greater Miami Jewish Federation, New Israel Fund and organizations working to elect progressive Democrats to public office.
Services will be held at noon, Sunday, March 25th at Temple Emanu-El, 1701 Washington Avenue, Miami Beach with internment to follow at Mount Nebo Miami 5505 NW 3rd Street. Following internment, the family will observe shiva at Bunny’s apartment; 10 Edgewater Drive, Coral Gables. The family will continue to sit shiva at her apartment Monday and Tuesday after 2pm and services will be held at 6:30pm.
