Betty Mitchell's Obituary
Office Manager to Boxing Hall of Fame Manager Angelo Dundee
Betty Mitchell
12/04/1924 – 03/15/2016
91, passed away quietly with family by her side at Memorial West Hospital in Pembroke Pines, Florida.
Born the youngest of three children in Wichita, Kansas to Emanual and Lenore Gerstenfield. While in high school there, she met and married her predeceased husband of 71 years, Paul Mitchell, and had two children. In 1956, they packed up the family and moved to Florida.
Working as a free-lance accountant, she eventually met Angelo Dundee and stayed for 44 years (1964-2008). While starting as his accountant, her duties rapidly expanded. Angelo trained the fighters while she managed the business. Her workaday world included dealings with many world-class athletes such as Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard, Don Mattingly, and Dan Marino; sports and media personages such as Howard Cosell, Don Shula, and Jimmy Johnson; and Hollywood celebrities such as Russel Crowe, Jamie Foxx, Will Smith, and Robert De Niro. She had an interesting life, full of stories that she related with humor and grace.
Betty also loved music and the stage. She learned the piano as a child and played into her elder years, often playing with her husband (drums) and son (trumpet) in the living room for friends or relatives. For a number of years, she belonged to an amateur theater group in which she performed in musicals such as Oklahoma, Annie Get Your Gun, and Damn Yankees. She also sang in the Temple choir.
Betty was a kind and giving person who always found time to help others; in the PTA, the Band Parents’ Organization, the B’nai B’rith, the summer camp at the Temple, and so much more. She was there for friends, helping them prepare for special events and supporting them in times of need. Her heart was as big as her smile and to the end, she never lost her hidden child. All those whose lives she touched will miss her.
Her children David and Cindy, grandson Scott Brandon and his wife Gabriela, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins survive Betty. Burial scheduled 3/22/2016 at Levitt-Weinstein Beth David Hollywood, FL at 2pm. Donations in memoriam to Hillel.
