Dr. Burton Jack Goldstein's Obituary
Dr. Burton J. Goldstein (92) of Aventura, Florida, passed away June 7, 2023, in the loving arms of his wife and soulmate Linda. He was the beloved father of Howard (Nati) Goldstein, Herb (Jeni) Goldstein and Brian Goldstein, and his bonus kids, Rep. Esther (Roger) Panitch, Len (Judge Samantha) Feuer, and Mark (Dr. Rachael) Feuer. Cherished grandfather to Alex, Danny (Alex), Christopher (Dr. Juliana), Abi (Dr. Danny), Lauren, Miriam, Ben, Jacob, Sophia and Jack. Brother in law to Dr. Walter (Gail) Fried and Herb (Linda) Fried.
Burton was a proud US Army Veteran, decorated for his service in the Korean War.
Burton was an Emeritus Professor of Psychiatry, Pharmacology and Public Health Sciences at the Miller School of Medicine, University of Miami. He received his MD from the University of Maryland and completed his psychiatry residency at the University of Miami Jackson Memorial Hospital Center in 1964. After he joined the faculty of the Dept. of Psychiatry, Burton was promoted to Professor and awarded tenure in 1972 and served as Chair of the Dept. of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences between 1983-1986.
Between 1996 and 2011, Burton served as Sr. Peer Reviewer and then Medical Director of the Miller School of Medicine, Behavioral Health System at UM. He had been a Principal Investigator on numerous federal grants awarded by the National Institute of Health, the National Institute of Drug Abuse and the Office of Education. His funding throughout his nearly 45 years as a tenured professor amounted to over $10,000,000 in today’s dollars.
Burton’s major research endeavors have been in clinical psychopharmacology. He was a Board Certified Psychiatrist and has been an examiner for the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Dr. Goldstein was a Life Fellow and Fellow of many professional organizations. He published extensively in scientific journals and contributed book chapters. He was a visiting professor at numerous national and international institutions and delivered over 650 invited lectures in over 40 countries.
Burton also served as the Medical Review Officer for the Dept. of Athletics, Drug Testing Program at the U of Miami.
He was consistently rated among the best US mental health professionals in the treatment of depression, and served as a first responder to first responders in Thailand after the tsunami and Haiti, after the earthquake. Above all, he was known as a doctor’s doctor, a mensch’s mensch and a loving family man.
