Cindy Carr leaves behind a legacy of philanthropic leadership
Cindy Davis Carr, retired Vice President of National Distributing Company (NDC), passed away last Sunday morning, June 19th at the age of 78. Ms. Carr was one of the most respected women in Miami, having honored the city with her business acumen, her philanthropic leadership and, above all, her generosity of spirit. Her family, friends, and colleagues as well as those who benefited from her continued generosity throughout her life will miss her dearly.
Cindy Carr was ahead of her time forging a career in the male-dominated spirits industry in the 1970s and 80s. Following in the footsteps of her very successful father, Alfred A. Davis, Cindy won respect through her hard work and initiatives in the highly competitive region of South Florida where some of the country’s top spirits companies are based. Ms. Carr had a dynamic public and professional persona and was blessed with a formidable drive and leadership capability. Despite the prestige and influence of her family, Cindy Carr wanted to establish her own legacy by fully committing herself to a countless array of philanthropic endeavors and accomplishments that will be recognized by the Miami community for many years to come.
Ms. Carr's greatest rewards came from giving to her deeply personal charitable causes. The carefully chosen organizations to which Ms. Carr contributed her time, money and sincerest efforts included the most important civic, cultural and medical institutions in Florida. This dedication won her countless awards and recognition. Some of her most notable are, The American Cancer Society, The Miami Opera, The Fine Arts Foundation, an Ember of the Artist Circle for the Miami City Ballet, Founder of Children’s Resource Center, Patron of the Miami Science Museum, Founding Honoree and ongoing supporter of Women of Tomorrow. The American Red Cross presented Ms. Carr with the Esteemed Philanthropy Award. She was an Ambassador for Project Newborn; She held a seat on the Executive Boards of The Vizcayans, Diabetes Research Institute, and Alzheimer’s Care along with Jackson/Memorial Medical Center. Ms. Carr is a Founder and major contributor to the Diabetes Research Institute and Foundation, and contributor to Mount Sinai Hospital. She was part of a group of women who chaired and organized The Love and Hope Ball for over 42 years called the YaYA Sisters of Hope.
One of the Institutions closest to her heart is the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center, inducting her as a Platinum Angel in 2014 in recognition for her continuous and generous gifts. She has been honored by The University of Miami-Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center as an Honorary Chair for 2015, 2016. Ms. Carr will always be remembered for these tireless efforts toward the community. This profound legacy of giving to countless charitable causes are her life’s’ work and encompass an unparalleled philanthropic contribution.
Ms. Carr is survived by her son and daughter, Stephen Carr Davis and his wife Jill of Chicago, and Emet Davis and wife Jill of Vancouver, Canada. She has one grand-daughter Grace, daughter of Stephen and Jill Davis. Her deceased father was the prestigious Founder of National Distributing Company and her mother, who also precedes her in death, was Edith Delacourt Snowise.
