Dr. Dalia Georgina Sanchez-Garcia's Obituary
Dr. Dalia Georgina Sanchez Garcia, born March 8, 1926 in Banes, Cuba and exiled to Miami in 1961, passed away peacefully at her home on June 14, 2014, surrounded by her loving family and doggies.
“Gina” was the daughter of Basilia Concepcion Abreu and Medardo Sanchez Santos. In addition to her parents, she was pre-deceased by her husband, Jose Garcia Gonzalez, sisters, Mayusa Camero and Lilia Recio, and brothers Osvaldo (Nene) and Gustavo Eber (Tabin) Sanchez. She is survived by son, Jose (Larry Wiggins) and daughter, Dr. Georgina Garcia (Carmen Davila), brother-in-law Antonio Recio and many nieces and nephews.
She and her daughter were the first mother and daughter team of dentists registered with the American Dental Association. She practiced in Habana, Cuba and for many years on Lincoln Road, Miami Beach. Dr. Dalia was president of many organizations including C.E.O.L.A., Dade Dental Study Club, Miami Beach Dental Association, and the Rotary Club of Miami Beach. Her many patients and their families loved and befriended her. She set up and donated dental clinics in several countries in Central and South America. Dr. Dalia was part of the Miami Medical Team at the US base in Guantanamo. She was an examiner for the Florida Dental Board, taught at the Mount Sinai Dental Clinic and was part of the TMJ clinic at University of Miami Oral Surgery Department.
Her greatest pleasure was spending time at family celebrations. The December 25th gathering at her home became a very anticipated extended-family celebration. Her hobbies included growing orchids and world traveling. The orchids she cultivated in her backyard won many first place ribbons at the Gold Coast Orchid Society shows. Her first foreign vacation took her to Greece and ignited a love for travel. Gina visited Italy, France, England, Spain, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Israel, Venezuela, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Paraguay, Uruguay, Peru, Ecuador, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, El Salvador, and Mexico.
Her bright smile will be missed by all. The family would like to thank the devoted helpers Carolina, Maria Virtudes, Jhoanny, Irma, Juanita, Shirley and others who assisted with her care.
In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to Donated Dental Services of South Florida at Dental Lifeline Network, 1800 15th Street, Ste. 100, Denver CO 80202 or on-line at http://dentallifeline.org.
