Donald Andrews Kaplan's Obituary
In loving tribute to Donald Andrews Kaplan (August 21, 1927-September 17, 2013) adored father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. Born to Anna and Benjamin Kaplan, he graduated from Miami Beach High School enjoying some of his fondest memories playing football and lettering in many sports. His sense of humor and winning smile endeared him to all. He enlisted in the army at age 17 and became a medic during the Korean War. He graduated from the University of Florida with an business degree and worked with his brother Ralph to build Flagler Insurance Agency which he eventually sold to Frank B. Hall. He was a tournament winning fisherman who enjoyed the simple pleasures of life along with his loyal friend Sandy Weisberg. He was honored by Aventura Hospital for his many years of volunteer service. He spent every morning at A.A. running the coffee bar and reading his hand- picked quote of the day to encourage the younger attendees. He is the proud father of Karen Kaplan of Boca Raton, FL and Kathy Kaplan of Tallahassee, FL and doting grandfather to Matthew and Marli Milask as well as Jordan and Jennifer Smith, he was predeceased by his sister, Pauline Sater, and brothers Ralph Kaplan and Dr. Sherman Kaplan. He greatly loved his sister-in-law, Mary Rose, as well as his nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. The family is eternally grateful to his long time friend and caretaker, Dorothea Lauther. A memorial service will be held at the Levitt Weinstein Memorial Chapel, 18840 West Dixie Highway, North Miami Beach, FL 33180 (305) 932-2700 on Friday, September 20, 2013 at 2:00 pm. The family requests that donations in Don Kaplan's name be made to Greater Miami Jewish Federation, 4200 Biscayne Blvd., Miami, FL 33137 (305) 576-4000.
