Dorris Drexel's Obituary
DREXEL, Dorris, born June 16, 1922 in Cleveland, Ohio, to Ethel and David Haas. Dorris was an RN stationed in the South Pacific during World War II. She was a Lieutenant. Received Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, WWII Victory Medal and American Theater Service Medal. She later attended UCLA, University of Hawaii in Honolulu, University of Miami (B.S.) and Florida International University (M.S.) In 1952, while en route to Havana, she met her future husband, Gustave Drexel. They married in Miami Beach in October 1953 and were married for 56 years. Dorris taught nursing for over thirty years. In 1960, Dorris started at Mt. Sinal Hospital where she taught until the nursing program ended. Thereafter, she worked for Miami Dade Community College. At that time, she received her Masters degree. Dorris was well known through out many hospitals because of her watchful eye over her students , her concern for the patient, and her students’ appreciation. Dorris also had a career in public health nursing. Dorris worked in Culver City as a public health nurse after the War, and later was a Visiting Nurses Association supervisor in Miami. Dorris volunteered a great deal of her life. She was President of the Miami Twins Club several times where she raised money for Easter seals. Dorris served as a Director for the Miami Beach Community Health center for many years. Dorris served on various legislative assignments and commissions for the Florida Governor on nursing and public health issues. Dorris was a loving mother and grandmother. She is survived by her three children and their families: Baron, Jodee and Mikenna Drexel; Janice, Alan and Erica Silver; and Judi, David and Benjamin Zand.
