Dr. Leonard Deutsch's Obituary
Dr. Leonard J. Deutsch, M.D., a respected psychiatrist, died on April 11 in New York, N.Y. He was 92 years old and he lived and practiced psychiatry in both New York City and Bal Harbor, Florida.
Leonard Deutsch was born on the Upper West Side of New York City in 1931. He attended LaGuardia High School, then The Medical Faculty of the University of Basel (Medizinische Fakultät der Universität Basel), which was founded in 1460. Upon his graduation in 1962 he completed his residency at Montefiore Medical Center-Albert Einstein College of Medicine, New York, N.Y.
Dr. Deutsch practiced psychiatry for more than 60 years and specialized in the treatment of depressive disorders. He treated patients up until his death, and he was known for his kindness and wisdom. He was also a generous and charitable man who dedicated more than 40 years to helping children in foster care through Catholic Charities. Throughout his life Dr. Deutsch had a great fondness for Switzerland, where he had a home for many years in Lugano. He also travelled extensively, and he was a great historian of World War II and its great battles.
Dr. Deutsch is survived by his partner, Michelle Buslik, his children Cynthia Deutsch Eckes and her husband Craig, Michael Bercovitz and his wife Elissa, Steven Bercovitz and his wife Joy, and six grandchildren, Brett, Sadie, Mollie, Madeline, Laudon and Andrew. Dr. Deutsch had been predeceased by Sondra Serota Deutsch, to whom he had been married for 30 years.
Services will be held at Lakeside Memorial Park in Doral, Florida on Sunday April 16, 2023 at 12:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Catholic Charities, (https://catholiccharitiesny.org/).
