Evelyn S. Kraut's Obituary
June 6, 1921 to March 13, 2023
Our mother, Evelyn Kraut, passed away peacefully early in the morning of March 13 in her home in Hollywood, Florida. Fortunately, Harriette and Allen were already there and I had just arrived for a visit a few days before her decline.
Just a few months shy of 102 years old, she was a strong woman during her entire life. Conceived in the Ukraine, she made the journey in our grandmother’s womb along with our grandfather and a brother 2 years her senior on a passenger ship bound for Ellis Island. Most of her younger life was spent in various boroughs of NY City. She moved to NJ about the time she met and married our father in 1945, who she outlived by almost 50 years.
After retiring as a math teacher in NJ and with a Master’s degree in teaching, she moved to Hollywood, FL in 1986 where she took great pleasure in the hot climate, the beaches and the multitude of friends she made there. She worked hard even in retirement by earning her Doctorate degree, studying with a Rabbi for a Bat Mitzvah, something not offered to girls of her generation, and volunteering many hours as treasurer for the local chapter of Hadassah, a Jewish charity.
She was independent into her mid 90’s, driving herself and her friends to the beauty parlor every week for the ritual hair styling, complete with hairspray to keep the "do" in place for the next 7 days. Every morning she dressed herself nicely for the day including matching jewelry for each outfit, manicured nails and lipstick.
She was one of a kind and will be remembered with fondness and love by many whose lives were touched by her never wavering positive, upbeat nature and her generosity that was truly notable. She will be greatly missed by her family for whom, she would say, always comes first.
