The day we became friends. It was not the best of circumstances but a day, I know, we both are truly grateful for. I will not speak of that day, as it was a very dark day in her life, one of many heartfelt days. I can only say, I thank God for the opportunity given to both of us to truly be a significant part of each other's lives. We helped each other through our despaires and tears; even shared each other's joys. I remember her laugh, her real laughter, her bubbly laughter, which now echoes in my mind, making me smile through my tears. The things we shared will always be treasures I will keep in my heart. Evelyn was one of a kind. Never, in my wildest dreams, did I expect her in my life. She once thanked me for being in Phil's life and said, "Sorry, but I got the better half. You got the leftovers, the core with the pits. Don't choke on them!" She was funny and sincere when she made that comment. She meant it with respect and concern, knowing she avoided the road I was on and thankful for the reprieve. We were not the kind of friends that went out for a drink. We we the kind of friends that drank together over the phone for hours. We gave each other comfort, advice and relief when we needed it. It was an honest and mutual bond that neither of us asked for, expected or denied. I love you, Evelyn, thank you for being in my life. You didn't have to be.
