Fern Leitman (1945 - 2014)
LEITMAN, FERN Our beloved Fern Leitman, 68, passed away Oct. 13, 2014. Born in 1945 to Carl and Ann Berent in Morristown, NJ, she grew up in Miami and graduated from Miami Senior High. An avid traveler, she also lived in New York City and Toronto before returning to Miami. She was devoted to her husband Philip for 32 years and had two adoring children, Jason Shapiro (Natalia) and Amy Leitman, and two grandsons, Julian and Nicholas, who were the lights of her life. She also leaves behind a loving sister Sondra and brother Craig, and many other beloved relatives and friends. An eternal optimist who was fun and outgoing, Fern always had a smile and never met a stranger whom she didn't befriend. She had a profound impact on many people, including those who suffered from the same illness she had, nontuberculous mycobacterial lung disease. She and her husband founded the leading advocacy organization for patients, physicians and researchers in the fight against NTM lung disease and her work has touched many lives. Services will be held on Wed., Oct. 15 at 11:30 a.m., Temple Beth Am, 5950 N. Kendall Dr. Interment will follow at Mt. Nebo - Kendall.
