Helen Stein's Obituary
Helen Mohrer Stein of Memphis, TN passed away on January 4, 2019 at the age of 101.
Helen was born in Brooklyn, New York on October 11, 1917.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Joseph, and her parents, Jacob and Fannie Mohrer. She is survived by three sons: Paul Stein (Sharon), Fred Stein (Leslie) and Sid Stein (Kim); six grandchildren: Mindee Fredman (Zev), Brad Stein (Lynne), Jessica Stein, Allison D’Angelo (Anthony), Kallie Brown and Gabriella Stein; and seven great-grandchildren: Max Stein, Abbey Stein, Jordan Stein, Daniel Fredman, Eitan Fredman, Nadav Fredman and A.J. D’Angelo.
Helen valued education and graduated from Hunter College in 1938 with a major in Physiology and a minor in Home Economics. She also attended Cornell University for graduate studies. She went on to teach Home Economics and first grade at P.S. 121 in New York.
She was a lieutenant in the United States Army and served during World War II in London, England as the Head Dietitian in a hospital.
After moving to Florida in the mid-seventies, she enjoyed volunteering at the JCC with a group for those who lived with Parkinson’s.
She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who always enjoyed telling stories of the past, teaching her loved ones to play gin rummy and winning her weekly Bingo games at the Memphis Jewish Home.
