Helen Wagner's Obituary
Helen Wagner, 92, passed away in Aventura, FL on February 12, 2018, surrounded by her loving family. Beloved mother, grandmother, daughter and sister, she is predeceased by her parents Abraham and Bertha Perlman (née Sapperstein). Born on May 9, 1925 in Chicago, Helen was raised in Washington, D.C., later settling in the Miami area, where she remained for the rest of her life. After marrying and raising her two daughters, she embarked on new mid-life career, receiving a B.A. in hospital administration from F. I. U., and a certificate in paralegal studies. She enjoyed working for nearly two decades in both fields.
Helen’s family was the epicenter of her universe. She was extraordinarily devoted to her family, giving her children and grandchildren innumerable meaningful memories. She was a fierce proponent of social justice and women’s rights. She also promoted Jewish culture (trying fervently to pass on Yiddish to her children and granddaughters ) and supporting Jewish causes. Throughout her life, she was engaged in her community, in recent years, volunteering for the Brandeis National Committee local chapter.
She is survived by her daughters, Dr. Robin Wagner (Dr. Gary Hastings), Diane Wagner Katzen (Bruce Katzen), her granddaughters, Brynn and Alli Katzen, and her loving life partner, Clifford Turkel. She is predeceased by her brother, Dr. Aaron Perlman (Elaine). She is also survived by many cousins from around the world, many of whom emigrated from Russia in the early 1900s.
The family wishes to extend deep gratitude to Jasinta Somers, who provided extraordinary care during her last years.
Services will be held at Temple Beth Sholom, Miami Beach, FL on February 14, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the ACLU, Planned Parenthood, or Temple Beth Sholom, Miami Beach.
