If I were given one word to describe my “adopted” mother, Helene, it would be “vibrant.” She was a generous soul, and her enthusiasm was contagious. Well educated and well read, she was not only interesting, but gifted with the ability to communicate easily with anyone on a variety of topics. Although soft spoken and petite in stature, I quickly learned during my first Passover dinner that she could have led an army, for like a true leader and educator, she commanded the attention of a room full of children or adults. She always made everyone feel welcomed and special. When life became difficult, she always handled the hurdles with great strength, courage and fortitude. Her perseverance was unmatched. Shortly after Spencer died, I went to check on her, visiting her unannounced. Still, she greeted me enthusiastically and shared her hospitality. With sadness in her eyes, she told me how much she missed him, yet it wasn’t long before she still managed to find that wonderful smile, a smile I shall never forget. Hers was a smile that was always coupled with resolute calm and optimism. I’m sure she touched many others, as she had such a positive effect on my life, and my admiration and memories of her will be etched in my mind forever. She was a loving mother to all, even her adopted daughter. Rest in peace, my second mom.
