Horacio Schlaen, a loving husband and father, a prominent Vascular Surgeon, passed away at the age of 81, surrounded by his family. His medical career spanned many decades beginning in 1967 until he retired his practice in 2020. Horacio was born in Santo Domingo, Argentina, grew up in Rosario, and came to the United States newly wed in 1970 for his residency in General Surgery in Worcester Massachusetts. After completing his surgical residency, he and his growing family moved to Boston where he completed his fellowship in Vascular Surgery at the prestigious Massachusetts General Hospital. Receiving this training at Mass General was one of the greatest professional honors of his life. After completing his fellowship, he and his family moved to Okmulgee, Oklahoma to begin his surgical practice. In 1985, his family moved to South Florida where he began what would be an illustrious career in vascular surgery, a practice for which he received a great many honors and awards. He was devoted to his patients.
Horacio had a rich and full life travelling all over the world and spending quality time with his family and friends. He was passionate about his family, his work, and his friends. Horacio was an outstanding cook and loved nothing more than preparing an "Asado" for the people he loved, always humbly telling his family that cooking for them was his pleasure. He was a generous and loving man in every way. He loved being Jewish and celebrating Jewish holidays with his extended family.
Horacio is survived by his wife of 54 years, Rosalie and his three daughters Sandra (Joshua) Lerner, Brenda (Randy) Friedman, and Marcela (Andrew) Kopelman. Nine grandchildren were a big part of his life: Arianna, Benjamin and Liat Lerner, Ellie, Mika and Zohar Friedman, and Jonah, Simon and Tobias Kopelman.
