Howard Salus' Obituary
SALUS, HOWARD, passed away on Friday morning October 18, 2013. Howard was born in December of 1933 in Philadelphia, and after two years in the Army, moved to Miami in 1970 to assume the position of vice-president of marketing and member of the Board of Key Pharmaceuticals. He later embarked in the publishing industry with TV News and Views and met Mavis, his wife and life partner of 25 years. Their interest moved to the creative end; reviewing theater, film, fashion, society, charitable organizations and dining venues under the new name of Entertainment News & Views. One of its features, the Arts Season Preview, was a successful, sought-after product and the 25th Anniversary edition was the pride of thousands.
Howard was a large man, with a huge presence; involved in many Civic endeavors as President of the Miami International Press Club, Children’s Cancer Caring Center, Trustee at North Dade Regional Chamber of Commerce, Aventura Marketing Council, Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce, Leading Ladies-Transplant Foundation, Board Member of Footlighters International, the boards of Greater Miami Festivals and Events Association, Redlands Tropical Gardens and served on panels reviewing under-graduate and graduate business plans at the Entrepreneurship Center of FIU.
After the sale of EN&V, Howard and Mavis were able to commit to writing about the environment, nutrition, the planet and healthy living on their popular web-site, ENVmagazine, “dedicated to the Quality of Life”.
In addition to his wife, Mavis, Howard is survived by daughters Lori Salus (Gregg Kleiner), Penny Salus (Jared Rubin) and grandchildren, Eli, Sophie, Tali, and Luis; and Mavis’s children, Penny Cilento, Gia Cilento, Abby Alpers, and Benjamin Cilento. and sister Edina Lessack (Alan)
Services will be held on Sunday October 20 at 12 noon at Levitt-Weinstein 18840 West Dixie Highway, North Miami Beach. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Leading Ladies, Inc. of the Transplant Foundation, P.O. Box 4316, Hallandale, FL 33008.
