Dr. James F. Gallagher Jr.'s Obituary
Dr. James F. Gallagher, Jr. of Stuart & Bal Harbour, age 95, passed away on May 18, 2018 at Mt. Sinai Hospital in Miami Beach, FL. He was born on February 6, 1923 in Boston, Mass. to Dr. James and Marie Gallagher. He was raised in Newtonville, Mass and graduated from Newton High School in in 1940. He attended Worcester Academy and entered Harvard University in the fall of 1941. He received a wartime graduation degree in 1944. While at Harvard he earned a varsity letter in baseball and was a lifelong member of the Harvard Varsity Club. He entered Tufts Medical School in 1944 and graduated in 1947. He completed a three-year residency at Boston City Hospital in 1950. Dr. Gallagher was then stationed to MacDill AFB in Tampa FL as a Captain in the Medical Corps. During this time, he decided to practice medicine in Miami Shores where he met his wife Helene DeVos. He and Helene were married for 64 years and she was his true companion and pillar of support until his death. They raised five children, sons James, Robert, William, and daughters Janice and Ann in Miami Shores where Dr. Gallagher established and maintained an OB/GYN medical practice from 1953 to 1986. Dr. Gallagher (Jim) was very passionate about his family and golf. He and Helene became original members of Sailfish Point in 1981 and were members of The Medalist and Indian Creek Country Clubs. Jim’s playing partners and family members enjoyed his golf talents and love for the game, if not his persistence. Jim was a quietly spiritual individual who lived in the moment and was appreciative of all the blessings bestowed upon him. His sense of humor will be missed by many of his friends. He is survived by his wife Helene and five children. The family requests that any remembrances /donations should be made to St. Christopher’s Church. A Memorial Mass will be held on Friday, May 25th at 10:00 AM at St. Christopher’s Church, 12001 SE Federal Hwy, Hobe Sound, FL 33455 Phone: (772) 546-5150 Burial arrangements will be private.
