Jay Steven Handleman's Obituary
Handleman, Jay Steven passed away Friday, August 14, 2015 in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky at the age of 59, of natural causes related to long term respiratory illness. Born in Worcester, Massachusetts, Jay's family moved to Surfside, Florida in 1957. Jay grew up in Surfside and in Hollywood. Having attended schools for the developmentally disabled in both Miami, Florida and Clarksville, Georgia, Jay later went to live for twenty five years at the Stewart Home School in Frankfort, Kentucky. He has spent the past year in a nursing home in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky.
Jay enjoyed swimming, bowling, horseback riding, boating and fishing, among other activities. But his greatest talent was that of inspiring others with his great zest for life, and his capacity for enjoying it in the face of its most ardent adversities. Jay brought life, light, love and inspiration into the lives of all whose paths he crossed.
Jay was the son of Howard Perry Handleman and Eleanor Ruth Handleman (née Kanef), both deceased. He is survived by a brother, Alan Handleman (Lexington, Kentucky), and a sister, Carol Ann Montana (Osterville, Massachusetts).
In lieu of flowers, the family requests charitable contributions supportive of either the developmentally disabled, or animal welfare. Jay adored animals, and animals were prominent and instrumental in bringing joy into his life.
A simple graveside service will be held at 1:00 pm Monday, August 17, 2015 in Davie at Temple Beth El Memorial Gardens, (954-584-7151), with arrangements by Blasberg-Rubin-Zilbert, (305) 538-6371.
