Jean Rachel Rubin's Obituary
Rubin, Jean Rachel will always be remembered for her courage and devotion to her family. She passed away on October 7, 2010. Jean was born on July 24, 1922 in Cleveland, Ohio to Morris and Eva Levin. She leaves her husband Dr. Harold S. Rubin of 64 years, her daughter Marcy Beth Rubin, and her son Mark Howard Rubin. Despite a tragic accident at the age of 17 in which she suffered a severe head injury and was in a coma for 2 days, she recovered and improved so much that she became a nurse at the Beth Israel Hospital in Boston, MA. Later she decided to enter the field of cancer research and worked with Doctors Engels and Nathanson at the Huntington Research unit at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Jean was married to Dr. Harold S. Rubin in 1946. Dr. Rubin served in the U.S. Army in the Philippines and became seriously ill. He returned to the USA and despite the doctor saying he would never recover Jean continued in being with him and eventually he recovered with her help to return to the practice of medicine. Jean was an active person and daily would go on a 6 mile power walk with her husband trying to catch up with her. She loved to dance and spent many evenings doing the merengue, bossa nova, and disco. She loved animals and spent 15 years with her toy poodle “Arrow” who is still bonded to her. For the past 12 years she has been the victim of a chronic illness and bravely fought it but lost in the end.
