Joan Jurmain's Obituary
JURMAIN, Joan was born on November 17, 1930 as the youngest of four sisters to Yetta & Louis Weiner in Elizabeth, NJ. An educator, beloved wife, & a loving mother & grandmother, Joan passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 16th, 2014. While attending college at Packard in New York City, Joan met & married Richard Jurmain & moved to Miami with their first son in the early 1950’s. After the birth of two more children, Joan focused on both raising her family & helping establish the family food brokerage business: Jurmain & Co. Joan devoted much of her time helping to nourish her three (very different) children, infusing them with culture, encouraging participation in community organizations, & always urging them to be strong individual advocates for important social issues. Joan later returned to Florida Atlantic University to earn a BA degree in Education & went on to teach Special Education classes & focus her attention to underprivileged children in the South Florida area. After Richard passed away in 1988, she continued her affection for teaching by working with recent immigrants at The Broward County Literacy program where she helped many of them obtain legal status & successfully integrate themselves into their new culture & surroundings. Joan is survived by her children Mark, Michael & Alan, daughters-in-laws Ann & Shelly, & grandchildren Jessica, Justin, Eric, & Brian. All have been blessed with the verve & strong moral compass Joan infused during their lives. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be directed to Vitas Innovative Hospice Care, www.vitas.com/florida. Services will be held at 12:00 noon on Wednesday, March 19 at Levitt-Weinstein-Beth David Chapel, 3201 NW 72 Ave., Hollywood, FL
