ALLISONJoseph M.D.January 13, 1924- April 25, 2012Dr. Joseph Allison, born in Brooklyn and South Florida resident for 55 years.Attended New York University on full tuition scholarship. Graduated NYU Medical School and completed internship and residences in NYC hospitals. Served in both World War II and The Korean Conflict and in the Army Medical Corps at Walter Reed Hospital, Brooke Army Medical Center and appointed Chief of Pediatrics Murphy Army Hospital. Served as ship surgeon for Grace Lines before settling in to private practice in Mt Vernon NY. Concurrently, he was a Clinical Instructor at Albert Einstein Medical School. Married JoAnne Workman and moved to South Florida where he set up the practice of Jaffe, Allison and Cremer in North Miami Beach. After 35 years of practice, treating 3 generations of pediatric patients, he retired. During his years of practice his interest in academics continued- advancing from Clinical Instructor to Associate Professor at the University of Miami Medical School. He was Chairman of Pediatrics at North Miami General and Parkway Regional Hospital. He held esteemed position of President of the Greater Miami Pediatric society and was Chairman of the School Health Medical Advisory Committee for Dade County for 10 years. He helped to promote the establishment of School Based Adolescent Clinics providing students access to medical care and preventive medicine. He was also a member of the DCMA Legislative Committee and was a key contact to several State Legislators active in promoting child health and safety in Tallahassee. He fought to keep physical education classes in the Dade County Schools to reduce the epidemic of child obesity and advocated for the elimination of junk foods and carbonated beverages in school lunches.During his retirement, Dr Allison audited classes at Florida International University and volunteered at The Village Drug Rehab Center, caring for babies born addicted to crack cocaine. He had a thirst for knowledge and a heart of gold. His spirit will live on. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, JoAnne, 4 devoted children, Julie, Jim, Judd and Jennifer, 4 grandchildren and countless former patients in the South Florida area.
