Mae Goldfine passed away at the age of 104. The last thing she said to me was, "I am not ready to go. I thought I had another year." Those words reflected my mom's true spirit, her ferocious zest for living no matter what the day brought. With her keen wit, intuitive power, absolute loyalty and ability to keep a secret, she was a role model for her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and their children.
Mae was born in Philadelphia, PA., the youngest of five children. Tragedy struck early when her mother died in the 1918 flu epidemic which may account for why she valued motherhood so dearly. Mae grew into a beautiful woman and married Milton Newman, a textile manufacturer and inventor. They had two daughters, Diane and Barbara.
In 1972, Milton passed away. Mae ran the business for several years until she sold it. She married Alfred Goldfine and they retired to Miami Beach. Mae was active in Hadassah where she was the social program chairman of the Bal Harbor chapter for over a decade.
My mom has been in my life for such a long time. She is a major part of who I am and I know she has made a positive difference in the lives of her family. We will always remember singing and laughing with her until we cried with joy. She was a grand lady whose steadfast wisdom and strength taught us to embrace life. -Diane Newman, December 29, 2015
