Marc Evan Umlas, MD's Obituary
Marc Evan Umlas, MD, age 60, of Miami Beach, Florida, passed away on Friday, May 5th, 2023. Marc was born on September 28th, 1962 in Brooklyn, New York to Stephen and the late Marsha Umlas. He grew up both in Long Island, New York and North Miami Beach, Florida. He graduated valedictorian of his class at North Miami Beach Senior High in 1980. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Harvard University and then attended Stanford University School of Medicine. He completed the Harvard Combined Orthopaedic Residency Program and went on to do fellowships at Harvard Medical School with Dr. Donald T. Reilly and at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City with Dr. Chitranjan Ranawat. He spent his whole career practicing Total Joint Replacement and Arthritis Surgery at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach, Florida, where he was the Stephen Muss Family Chair of Orthopaedics. He was also a Clinical Assistant Professor at the Florida International University School of Medicine. Marc and the love of his life, Rachel, were together for 33 years. Marc’s legacy is continued by his wife, Rachel, and their three children, Jordan (20), Hannah (15), and Max (15), as well as his father, Stephen (the late Marsha) Umlas, and sister, Shari-Lynn (Ari) Odzer. Marc was an inquisitive, intelligent, generous, hilarious man. He held great love for astronomy, model airplanes, medicine, music, history, and his many pugs. Marc and Rachel shared a passion for reading and nature, and loved to spend time in their log cabin in Boone, North Carolina, with their beautiful family and friends. Marc never missed an opportunity to learn and grow, and never forgot to tell his family and friends much he loved them. May his memory be a blessing. The Marc Umlas Memorial Music Fund at Temple Beth Sholom has been established by the Umlas Family to honor Marc’s memory.
