Marcia Smerling's Obituary
Marcia Muriel Olshan Smerling of Highland Beach, Florida – formerly of Brooklyn New York, Queens New York, Norwalk Connecticut, and Newton Massachusetts -- recently passed away peacefully 3 days short of her 88th birthday.
She was married for 50 years to Herman Smerling and is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, David and Abbe Smerling of Lexington Massachusetts, grandchildren Rebecca, Melissa and Jessica, and great grandchildren, Sophie and Ruby; and by her son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Rene Smerling, and grandchildren, Kelly and Sarah.
Marcia was very active in local and state politics, having several times been named as the Republican Woman of the year in Newton Massachusetts, was regularly the campaign manager for the very popular long standing Mayor of Newton, Theodore Mann, and she had attended the Inauguration and the Inaugural Ball for every Republican President since Richard Nixon.
Prior to retirement, Marcia continued to educate herself by taking a number of seminars and courses at Boston College. On June 13th, 1986, at the age of 59, she fulfilled a life long dream of having a Bat Mitzvah.
Marcia was a founding member of Aid For Cancer Research, a local charity that raised funds for cancer research and equipment in the Boston area. On May 19th, 1998, she was recognized for her efforts by having a piece of equipment donated to the Boston Medical Center in her name and by a luncheon thrown in her honor. Marcia worked as the assistant Treasurer for the Boston Chamber of Commerce for a new of years, and worked beside her husband at Associated Sleep Industries.
Marcia will be sorely missed by her children, grand children, great grand children, relatives and all the colleagues and good friends she made along the way.
