Marvin Joseph Maurer's Obituary
Marvin Maurer, 84, of Sunrise, Florida passed away surrounded by his family and endless love on Monday, June 16, 2014.  Born to Ben and Frieda Maurer, in the Bronx, NY, Marvin lived most of his adult life in Monticello, NY.
Marvin enjoyed success in two of his passions:  Education as a gifted teacher and in music as a trumpet player/singer..  In the 50's and 60s, Marvin worked in the hotels as a club date player and was the band leader at the Raleigh  and Stevensville Hotels.  In the late 70's, Marvin returned to college and became  a teacher. He taught sixth grade Social Studies at the Monticello Middle School until his retirement in the 80's  During that time, he invented the  Feeling Words curriculum which was the forerunner to what is now understood as Emotional Intelligence training.  His curriculum has been further developed at the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence by his nephew, Dr. Marc Brackett and is now known as the RULER program for children pre-k to College.  Marvin was honored at the Yale Center for his contributions at the grand opening in October 2013.
He was a fiercely proud husband, father, grandfather and uncle.  A true family man, his favorite pastime was making sure that his friends knew that every single one of his kids, grandkids and nephews were " ALL gifted, fabulous and successful."    He was not a small talker, but a brilliant philosopher who's loving views on life inspired  his family, friends and colleagues.
He is survived by his  wife of 42 years, Phyllis Maurer of Sunrise, Fl, his son and daughter-in-law  Richard and Lisa Maurer of Pembroke Pines, Fl , daughter, Ellyn Solis-Maurer of West Orange, NJ., his four grand-children: Esme Solis-Maurer, Megan Maurer, Jerad Maurer and Jacob Maurer, his nephews Dr. Marc Brackett and husband Horacio Marquinez, Dr. Steven Nadler and wife, Leticia Fraga Nadler, Dr. David Nadler, great niece and nephew, Sofia and Benjamin Nadler, his brother-in-law, Bill Brackett and wife Jane Brackett and his sister-in-law, Sandra Price, along with many loving cousins and friends. Marvin was pre-deceased by his sister Diane Brackett and his parents Ben and Frieda Maurer.
His mantra was, "Knowing who you are in terms of how you think and feel is the key to knowing others."  His heartbroken family will heal knowing that his message lives on through all of us.  Memorial services for Marvin Maurer will be held at Levitt-Weinstein Memorial Chapel in Tamarac, Florida on Thursday, June 19, 2014 at 2:00pm.  Donations in his name may be made to
