Marvin L. Meitus M.D.'s Obituary
MEITUS, M.D., Marvin L., 95, passed peacefully in his sleep on June 4 in his Miami home. He is survived by his three children Donna, Steamboat Springs, Colorado, Vicki and Daniel Meitus, both from Denver, Colorado, and his two grandchildren Alexander and Andrew Meitus. Born in 1921 in Cincinnati to Herman and Gertrude Meitus, he graduated Hughes High School in 1939, and University of Cincinnati in 1943. He graduated the UC Medical School in 1946 as part of the Army Special Training Program during WWII. In high school, Marvin wrote for the school newspaper and tapped danced. He served as a medical officer in Germany from 1947 to 1949. He married Lois Litwin from Cincinnati, Ohio in October 1949 after he returned from proudly serving his country. Lois passed away in 2008 after 59 years of marriage to Marvin. In 1953, he began practicing Internal Medicine and Cardiology in Miami Beach with David Nathan, Cole Kramer, Ron Scher, Ed Canto and then for the last 21 years of his career with Neil Schneider, M.D. He was instrumental in the advancement of Fetal Electrocardiography, publishing articles and presenting to the American Heart Association Annual Meeting in 1967. He served prominent roles on the staff of Mt. Sinai Medical Center of Greater Miami (Emeritus), Miami Heart Institute and Jackson Memorial Hospital. One of Marvin’s passions included playing a leadership role on the medical staff at Carnival Cruise Lines, New World Symphony and convention events, such as Miss Universe. He was a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Miami, where he mentored many medical students in developing their bedside manner. His hobbies included collecting German Steins, tennis, traveling and spending time with his family. In 1981 he initiated an annual family reunion in a different location each year. He retired from active practice in July 1992. He belonged to Temple Beth Sholom, Miami Beach. He was recognized in May 2014 during their Ageless Wisdom program celebrating congregants with 50 or more years of adult membership.
