Marvin H. Siegel's Obituary
SIEGEL, Marvin Haas, 82, Beloved husband of 55 years, adoring father and grandfather and one of the most honorable men who ever lived, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 9, 2016. Born in Pittsburgh's Squirrel Hill neighborhood, Marvin overcame much adversity early in life to achieve much professional success and a lifetime of joy and happiness. At the age of 13, the death of Marvin's father Sam Siegel prompted his mother Gertrude to move young Marvin and his younger sister Joan to Miami Beach in 1948 to start a new life. After graduating from Miami Beach High in 1952, Marvin went on to get his accounting and law degrees from the University of Miami. During law school, Marvin fell in love and married his "precious, darling angel" Juyne Cohen Siegel. Together they raised a family based on Jewish traditions of dignity and respect for all human life. Marvin's eternal optimism, selflessness with a child's heart, permeated every aspect of his being. He enjoyed traveling the world and the family's annual trips to Walt Disney World. He enjoyed fishing in the Keys, playing tennis and golf with his wife and children and was a devoted fan of the Miami Dolphins and the Miami Hurricanes where he was a season ticket holder for nearly fifty years. Professionally, Marvin's career at the University of Miami's Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine was highlighted by serving as the (de facto) chief financial officer for nearly 35 years. During this time, the Miller School became nationally recognized for excellence in both research and clinical care. He was the author of the medical faculty's Professional Income Plan, a key leader in creating the annual operating agreement with Jackson Memorial Hospital, help lead the Miller School's efforts in securing millions of research dollars from the State of Florida's legislature, and enabled hundreds of Cuban medical doctors and other foreign nationals secure their U.S. medical credentials and practice medicine in the U.S.A. His leadership on the national level included serving as the national chair of the Association of American Medical Colleges' Group on Business Affairs. In 2004, paying homage to his hero Stephen Hawking, he co-authored, A Brief History of the Group on Business Affairs Association of American Medical Colleges. In addition to his wife Juyne, Marvin leaves behind sister Joan, loving children Scott (Sandi), Lisa (Belkis) and Aimee, and his amazing grandchildren Rachel, Natalia, Brandon, Hannah, Justin and Dylan. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the area of your choice within the University of Miami. The funeral service will be held at 12:00 noon, Friday, November 11th at Temple Beth Am, 5950 S.W. 88th Street, Pinecrest, Florida. Arrangements by Blasberg-Rubin-Zilbert (305) 538-6371
