Michael Melnick's Obituary
MELNICK, Michael 74, passed away at his North Miami Beach home on Thursday, June 29, 2017, in the company of his wife, Laura, their three sons, Landy, Jordan and Justin, and beloved pup, Marley. Michael was born in the Bronx on Sept. 18, 1942. As a child he moved to Miami with his parents, Irving and Mary Melnick, and siblings, Joann, Stephen and Merrill. The oldest child, Michael became a bar mitzvah at Tifereth Israel Northside Center on January 21, 1956.
Michael attended both Miami Edison Senior High School and North Miami Senior High School. As a teenager, he worked as a baker for his father at Beach Bagel Bakery. In 1960 he joined the United States Navy, cruising from the Mediterranean to the Orient in service to his country. He received an honorable discharge in 1967.
Michael earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Miami on June 12, 1966. After receiving his master’s degree from Florida International University, he started an accounting firm in 1983 and with various partners built a practice that remains in business to this day.
On Dec. 19, 1978, Michael and Laura began their 38-year marriage with an intimate wedding at their first home,
in North Miami.
Michael brought kindness, honesty and a sense of humor to the world. He could recite a Sid Ceasar joke, Elvis lyric or Paul Newman line as if he’d just heard it. He assumed the best in people and had infinite patience. He found joy in a round of golf, cooking a holiday meal for his family, spinning at the MAR-JCC and singing songs to his grandson, Max Emerson Melnick, who shares his initials. He asked for little and gave much in return.
He died after a battle with pancreatic cancer. Johnny Cash was singing in the background: “I hear the train a-coming, it’s rolling ‘round the bend…”
In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial contribution to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital www.stjude.org/donate to help in advancing research and treatments for kids with cancer.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, July 2, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Levitt-Weinstein Memorial Chapel, 18840 W. Dixie Hwy., N. Miami Beach. Arrangements by Blasberg-Rubin-Zilbert (305) 538-6371
