Dr. Michael Stephen Spiegel's Obituary
Dr. Michael Stephen Spiegel of Miami Beach, Florida passed away on September 27. He was born on August 18, 1943 to Joseph Leo and Esther Spiegel in Miami Beach. Michael is survived by his son Brett Spiegel, his son Sean Spiegel and wife Sarah, his son Dean Spiegel and wife Karina, his brother Frederick Spiegel, and his four grandchildren Connor, Adrian, Samantha, and Marlyn. Michael received a Bachelor of Science from the University of Florida in 1964 and Doctorate in Physics from the University of Miami in 1974. Michael's career began as a technical manager for NASA's Apollo Project. Michael's diverse interests led him to work in a number of realms. He received multiple patents in naval architecture and electromagnetic fields and authored several books spanning different genres. Michael founded a medical device company and spent many years developing a non-invasive medical treatment technology. From a young age, Michael took to the sea, and cruising remained his passion for the rest of his life. He was an accomplished sailor, boater, fisherman, diver, and windsurfer. "Captain Mike" could fix almost anything and was the person you'd want by your side in a real or metaphorical storm. His happiest moments came aboard his boat the Rogue Dog in the Bahamas with his wife, Marilyn, his sons, friends, and the family dogs. Michael's iconoclastic exuberance shined through whether spearfishing or in robust philosophical and political discussions. He was truly one of a kind. His memory will live on through his family and friends forever. The Memorial Service will be Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Blasberg-Rubin-Zilbert Memorial Chapel, 720 71st Street, Miami Beach. Shiva will be held at the home of Dean and Karina Spiegel from Friday through Sunday. In lieu of flowers, donations in Michael's memory may be made to the Union of Concerned Scientists www.ucsusa.org.
