Mortimer Fried's Obituary
FRIED, Mortimer, born January 20, 1922 in NYC, passed away peacefully on October 2, 2017. Mort was predeceased by his parents, Frank and Bertha, his wife, Joy, and by his brother, Daniel. At 18, he came to Miami to study business at the University of Miami. Mort’s education was interrupted when he enlisted in the Army Air Corps to serve in the Pacific Theater from August 20, 1942 to February 16, 1946.
Returning to the U, Mort was awarded a Bachelor’s degree in Business. His loftier goal was the Juris Doctor degree, which he earned from UM Law School. He met the love of his life and wife of 67 years, Joy, on the beach (Miami Beach). When they moved to Key Biscayne in 1951, along with their son Scott, they were part of the first 100 pioneer families to settle that new development. Shortly thereafter, Mark and Dyan were born. Mort is survived by his children and grandchildren: Ivan Scott (Jackie), Sima; Mark (Gail), Matthew (Andrea), Rachel & Amanda; and Dyan (Steven) Simon, PJ, Arielle, Brett & Jared.
Mort’s practice of law from 1950 to 2014 was good, but that didn’t make him famous. What did was his love for the community of Key Biscayne demonstrated by his more than 60 years of civic activity. Mort was the president of numerous organizations on the Key. He served on the Village Council for 11 years, during which he was instrumental in the Village’s acquisition of the Village Green.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to American Legion Post 374 or the Key Biscayne Lions Club. Services will be held on Friday, October 6, at 10:30 AM at Temple Israel of Greater Miami, 137 NE 19 Street, Miami. Arrangements by Blasberg-Rubin-Zilbert (305) 865-2353
