Murray Aaron Candib's Obituary
CANDIB
Murray Aaron, a man of impeccable taste and panache, passed away June 7, 2013 at the age of 97. Murray had enjoyed life and lived it to the fullest up until being diagnosed with lung cancer in May 2013. He was born on September 16, 1915 to Fannie and Jacob Candib in Chelsea, Massachusetts. After learning the retail business from the ground up, Murray founded King’s Department Stores in Springfield, MA in 1949. King’s was the first self-service department store. Six years after opening his first store, he brought his former boss, Ollie Cohen, in as a full partner. Together they took King’s public and built it into a chain of over 200 stores. Murray was proud to be listed as the man who introduced the shopping cart into the department store. Always good in business, Murray, who loved to sing, did not limit himself. He nourished his creative side by starting a regional theater in the Springfield area. This endeavor brought him into contact with actors and singers, some of whom remained lifelong friends. A man who enjoyed life, he moved to Miami Beach in the 1960’s. In the 1970’s, he and his wife Claudette started a family and became active in both the social and philanthropic life of Miami Beach. He wed Maureen Davis in 1995 and they blended their families over the years. His 95th birthday party was a celebration of life, family and friends. Watching the video made of the party gave him pleasure till the end of his life. Murray was a proud Shriner. He was honored by Mahi Shrine for his fifty years of being a Shriner. He was a Society member of Mount Sinai Medical Center and a lifetime trustee, a position which gave him great pride. He leaves behind his devoted wife Maureen and four children: Nancy Candib, Rachel Candib, David (Vanessa) Candib and Caroline Candib. He also leaves behind seven step-children: Marisa (Mark) Yanta, Andrea (Gerry) Goldklang, Greg (Adriana) Davis, Geoff Davis, Sabrina Davis, Francesca Silvestri and Mark Chester. All plus eighteen grandchildren (and another on the way) and his four great-grandchildren will miss him. His family is grateful to the wonderful women who were his caregivers for their kindness and care. The family asks that any donation in his memory be made to Shriners Hospital for Children at www.shrinershospitalsforchildren.org. Chapel Service Sunday, June 9th at 11:00 a.m. at
