Oscar white lit up every room he walked in. I first met Oscar in the early 80s as a young attorney. At the time I wasn't doing so well, and he assisted me, in more ways than one, on many occasions. I was fortunate enough to be a social and business associate of Oscar White for over 25 years. In the mid-80s well into the late 90s, Oscar was THE rainmaker, the go-to guy. He was one of a handful of attorneys in South Florida that provided first-class legal advice to individuals accused of a crime.
The atmosphere at the law office was always one of a family. Oscar was almost always smiling much like the picture you see on this page, and he was quick to lend a helping hand to whoever needed assistance in whichever way he could help. He was kind and gracious to employees, including loyal employees that had been with him for decades.
Some of the best memories of my entire life were with Oscar, and his son Jay. I used to tag along with Jay and his dad on some of the excursions to the Bahamas. Some of the most magnificent memories of my whole life are from those days, which including diving and fishing in the Gingerbreads, and wall diving in Eleuthera.
There is an old joke that goes like this. One fellow says to his friend: What do you think of those religious Jews that cheat in business? His friend responds, How about those religious Jews that eat on Yom Kippur? Wait a minute, if you eat on Yom Kippur, then you are not religious, says the first guy. The friend responds, anyone who cheats in business is not religious either.
Oscar was one of the founding members of a large synagogue. For his generation, his involvement in organized religion was remarkable. He observed G-d's mitzvos by conducting himself in a dignified, ethical manner, and being helpful and understanding with others. He was honest in business. He was generous to charitable causes and to family and friends. He was involved in civic affairs.
Oscar lived a full life. He was friends with my father, Judge Edward N. Moore. His son Jay is one of the nicest people I have ever met. Jay has good qualities, always cleaned the boat after fishing, is a loving father and husband and a hard-working attorney.
Oscar did good. I will miss him. May his memory be for a blessing.
