Roslyn "Rose" Gordon's Obituary
GORDON, Roslyn (Rose) born in New York City, February 4, 1918, died September 27, 2013. Rose grew up in Asbury Park, New Jersey, but developed her lifelong love for South Florida during her family's yearly vacations to Miami Beach. In 1939, Rose finally moved to Miami with her husband, Alexander Gordon (of loving memory). Together, they raised three children, Melvin Gordon (Joan), Gail Chepenik (Stephen) and Stephen Gordon. She is also survived by 6 grandchildren: Stacy Linkin (Robert); Scott Chepenik (Sonja Cendak); Beth Simmer (Peter); Michelle Greenwald (Jeff); Adam Chepenik (Marissa); and Daniel Gordon, and seven great-grandsons: Noah and Tobias Linkin; Evan Simmer; Xander and Garrett Greenwald; and Benjamin and Elliott Cendak-Chepenik. Along with the great satisfaction she received from her family, Rose achieved considerable professional success and was a trailblazing woman in the Miami political scene. Rose served as a City of Miami Commissioner for many years, was the Vice Mayor of the City of Miami, and in 1979, was nearly successful in her bid to become the first female Mayor of the City of Miami. As a public servant, Rose was a tireless advocate for the people of the City of Miami. Rose spearheaded campaigns to develop day care centers and after-school centers for children, as well as recreation centers for Seniors, chaired a political action committee to solve Miami's rental housing crisis and was instrumental in the development of the downtown Miami "minibus" system which ultimately was developed into Miami's "peoplemover" system. Rose also served on the City of Miami Pension Trust Fund Board of Directors for more than 30 years, during which time she was Chairwoman of the Pension Trust Fund Board, and ultimately, was named its Chairwoman emeritus. Rose was also a well known Miami Realtor. For more than 50 years she successfully founded and ran Rose Gordon Realty. During that time, Rose served on and was chairwoman of the Board of Directors of the Miami Board of Realtors and was the first female director of the Florida Planning and Zoning Association. Rose's success as a Miami Realtor was noted in Stuart Mclver's book "The Greatest Sale on Earth." Funeral services will be held Monday, September 30, 2013, at 1:00 PM at Levitt Weinstein Funeral Home (18840 West Drive Highway, North Miami Beach).
