Sandra "Sunny" Helmrich's Obituary
Sandra “Sunny” Helmrich passed away on December 28, 2020 in Aventura Florida. She was 82 years old. Born in Pittsburgh to Wray (Gold) and Maurice Wheeler in 1938, Sunny attended Taylor Alderdice High School in Shadyside (except on days it was snowing, or raining). In 1964 she married Ernie and began a legendary 56-year journey filled with adventure, charity, joy and love. Together with Ernie, they ran restaurants in Pittsburgh and South Florida. Over the course of a dozen years, they hosted Pup-A-Go-Go Diabetes Golf Tournaments, raising millions to open four research laboratories in Pittsburgh hospitals. The lifestyle of 1980’s Turnberry Isle brought her down South, where Sunny enjoyed golfing, playing cards, and nights out on the town. In addition to Ernie, Sunny leaves behind her daughters Lauren Adams (husband Rick) and Caryn Cirella (husband Dean), and son Todd Helmrich (wife Jana). She was also the proud grandmother to Alexandra, Brad and Ben Cirella, Rylie Adams, and Maya and Sammy Helmrich. She will be missed by all who knew her and welcomed to a fantastic canasta game by those awaiting her arrival with the warmth and love she deserves.
