Sandra Hequin's Obituary
Hequin, Sandra Helayne Schechter
"Don't tell me not to live, just sit and putter
Life's candy and the sun's a ball of butter
Don't bring around a cloud to rain on my parade
Don't tell me not to fly, I've simply got to
If someone takes a, spill it's me and not you
Who told you you're allowed to rain on my parade"
Like the character in Funny Girl, Sandra Schechter Hequin never let the rain bring down her parade. Diagnosed with stage 4 cancer on October 3rd, just 37 days later on November 7th, Sandy Hequin took her last breath with her family holding her hands and by her side. She lived her life with a fierce determination, a notorious feistiness, and a heart that seemed to grow bigger each day.
Born on March 19th 1961 she lived her entire life here in Miami. A Florida girl through and through, Sandy went to The University of Florida and The University of Miami.
Sandy devoted her life to her family and to her family's business, Morays Jewelers. Morays Jewelers is not simply a retail store. Morays is a family tradition, a landmark in Downtown Miami, and well known throughout the world. Sandy was a world renowned leader and visionary in the jewelry business, respected and admired by many. In 2008 she was awarded Business Woman of The Year.
Sandy started her lifework young. In the Schechter family tradition, the offspring start working at the ripe age of 5. Sandy was given a broom to sweep the store floors while soaking up the knowledge of the business under the tutelage first with her Grandparents, Murray and Sally Schechter and then along side her parents Richard and Libby Schechter who, till this day, provide support and encouragement to Morays Jewelers.
She will be deeply missed by many many people including her parents, Richard and Libby Schechter, her two children, Tiffany Hequin, Beau Hequin and her soon to be daughter-in-law Elena Vertlib, her sister Jill Leslie, cousins Brenda and Alan Kroll, Mona Heisler, Ryan Heisler, Lisa and Frank Milstead, Gary and Kathy Gottlieb, Gail and Jason Keifert, Aunt Evelyn Gottlieb, Aunt Irene and Uncle Shelly Maisel and family. Her many friends and colleagues will miss her dearly including Chris Riley, Rina Stein, Gladys Vazquez, Dawn Cope and Bruce Hornick. Her 'Morays Family' will miss her terribly and of course her faithful canine companion Jeremy misses her already.
Sandy's soul sparkled like a diamond. When you look up at the night sky remember she is shining back on you like a star.
In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations can be made to Susan G. Komen For The Cure.
The funeral will be held at Levitt Weinstein, at 18840 West Dixie Highway in North Miami Beach on Monday November 10th at 2:00PM with shiva at Richard and Libby Schechter's house at The Point in Aventura. Arranged by Blasberg-Rubin-Zilbert (305) 538-6371
