Dr. Saul L. Katz's Obituary
Dr. Saul "Solly" Lawrence Katz of Hollywood, Florida, formerly of Wayne, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on June 3, 2017, due to complications from Alzheimer's Disease. Beloved husband of Isabel P. Katz, cherished father of Danielle Malone of Hollywood, dear uncle of Lori Katz (Michael Feldstein) of Princeton, NJ & Robert Katz (Valarie Cordova) of Short Hills, NJ. Dr. Katz was a retired dentist who practiced in Union City, New Jersey for 36 years before retiring to Hollywood, Florida.
It is hard to know where to begin-to best describe him to those who never knew him, and to flesh out the whole of him to those who only knew him in one area of life. First and foremost, he was an outstanding human being, and a good, decent man. He was a phenomenal father, my best friend and the greatest love of my life. I told him that for me, he was the man who had hung the sun and the moon and the stars. In his room hung a poster that read "I love you to the moon and back". And then some, I was able to learn so much from him because he led by example. He was a "do as I do" kind of man, which earned him a tremendous amount of respect not only from his family and friends, but also his patients, colleagues, the strangers he encountered every day, and the caregivers that assisted him in the last year of his life.. You could always count on him to do the right thing. Even when no one was looking. I believe that's what some call integrity.
Saul was also a loving, caring husband to both his first wife, Delores, who passed away in 1986 of brain cancer, and also to Isabel, whom he married in May of 1990. She brought his smile back. We often joked with him that he lucked out twice. But his wives were just as lucky, and they knew it. Few people get so lucky in love, once, if ever, but Saul shared in that incredible partnership not
once, but twice.
He was an avid reader, a talented writer, and also a man of science. On a lazy Sunday morning you could find him sitting on the couch in the den reading the New York Times. At one point in his life he had wanted to be a journalist, and his secret dream was to be a radio show host. He was the dentist that no one was afraid to go see and a Korean War veteran. As a boy he played stickball in Brooklyn, and loved to listen to "The Shadow" on the radio.
He loved well, and he was well loved. And we will miss him every day with every breath. Goodnight, Solly Katz. Sleep tight.
Cryptside Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 6, 2017 at Beth David Memorial Gardens, 3201 N. 72nd Street, Hollywood, Florida. Arrangements by Blasberg-Rubin-Zilbert Memorial Chapel (305) 538-6371
