SheiLa Schwedock Steiner's Obituary
SheiLa Schwedock Steiner
1937-2014
SheiLa Schwedock Steiner died Friday, December 5, 2014 after a brave, eight-year battle with ovarian cancer.
She was born in New York City to Louis and Roberta Schwedock. A long time resident of Miami, she was a graduate of Miami Beach High school, class of 1955. Well-known in philanthropic circles, SheiLa worked tirelessly for Beth Torah Synagogue in North Dade, where she served on the Board of Directors and countless committees for over 30 years.
She was an active fundraiser and supporter of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation, where she served as Chair and Co-Chair of the Williams Island Program Committee for eleven years. She was also one of the original tutors of the I Have a Dream program, which helps
students stay in school and prepares them for college opportunities. She strongly supported Jackson Memorial and University of Miami Hospitals, where she was a Golden Angel.
She was preceded in death by her husband Bill, but she often spoke of his loving, attentive care during her lengthy illness before he succumbed to pancreatic cancer in 2012. They were married for 51 years and had many exciting and interesting times together, splitting time between residences in San Francisco and Williams Island, Florida and traveling the world.
She is survived by four sons, Robert (Boots Whitmer) of San Francisco CA, Richard, of Santa Rosa, CA, Michael (Carol) of Hallandale, FL and David of Port Richey, Fl. She adored her two daughters-in-law and counted them among her many blessings.
Her fifth and youngest son, Jim, predeceased her in 1989. A school building at Beth Torah Synagogue and a scholarship at the University of Florida are named in his memory.
SheiLa is also survived by four grandchildren, Marc Steiner of San Francisco, California, Katie Steiner of Alexandria, Virginia, Jacki Steiner of New York, New York and Jessica Steiner of Hallandale, Florida.
She is also survived by her only sibling, Peter Schwedock (Roberta) and their three children, Amy Warhaft (Chad), Alan Schwedock, and Nikki Schwedock as well as a grand niece, and three grand nephews.
SheiLa encouraged her children, grandchildren, other friends and relatives to pursue higher education. She proudly attended every graduation. Although she tirelessly helped others, in her spare time she was an interior decorator, a retail fashion designer and the consummate hostess.
SheiLa gave so much of her time, energy, warmth and caring to friends and anyone who crossed her path. During her illness a steady stream of friends and relatives, far and wide, called and encouraged her. She was deeply grateful for the comfort and help during her illness from her many friends and family. The family wishes to thank the doctors and nurses at Jackson Hospital for their care and professionalism.
Donations in her memory may be sent to any of her favorite charities.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, December 7, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at Levitt-Weinstein Memorial Chapel, 18840 W. Dixie Highway, North Miami Beach, FL 33180 (305) 932-2700
