Sophia Schwartzbaum's Obituary
SCHWARTZBAUM
Sofia passed away June 5th. Sofia was born and raised in Cuba. She married Samuel Schwartzbaum and with her two young children, Steven and Sara, left Cuba for New York in 1961. Although they were recent immigrants, they immediately became active in the American Dream and in Jewish life. Sofia volunteered in the children's schools and received numerous awards for her work. In 1968 the family moved to Miami Beach and immediately became involved with Israel Bonds. As campaign president, Samuel received the Ben Gurion Award. They also received several appreciation awards from the Combined Jewish Appeal for their involvement in those campaigns. Sofia was one of the founders of the Interamerican Chapter of Hadassah. She held many positions, including President. She is a life member, along with her children and grandchildren, and five times Ima. She received the Presidential Award and the Citizens Award from the City of Miami Beach in recognition of her service. Sofia also held several positions in Temple Menorah's PTA. She was director of the Youth Movement and stepped in as interim administrator. She was also president of the Women's Auxiliary of Temple Menorah for 10 years and received the Pillars of Hope Award for her dedication and devotion. Sofia is survived by her husband of 59 years, Samuel, her children, Sara Jove (David) and Steven Schwartzbaum (Bonnie) her sister, Masha Phillips (Steve), and her sister-in-laws, Lidia and Johnny Schwartzbaum & Jaime and Julia Borenstein, as well as her five grandchildren. Her dream was to see a peaceful, strong, and prosperous Israel and success in life for her grandchildren, Adam, Alison, and David Schwartzbaum, Jacqueline and Stacey Jove. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in her honor to the Temple Menorah Women's Auxiliary Building Fund. Chapel Services 1:00 p.m. TODAY, June 7th at Levitt-Weinstein Eternal Light Funeral Center, 18840 W. Dixie Hwy., N. Miami Beach.
