Stella Zacharia Alfassa's Obituary
Stella Zacharia Alfassa, beloved mother of Rae Ellen and Joel, passed away Jun 19, 2014 peacefully following many years of health struggles. She was mother-in-law to Chuck, whom she adored, and "Nana" to Sara, Alyssa and Charlie who brought her great joy. Always the big sister to Isaac ("Goody"), Linda, and Murray and sister-in law to many and especially Beth Alfassa.
She and husband Albert moved from New York to Florida in 1957 and raised their children in North Miami. She fought tirelessly for her son Joel ("Joey") who was severely mentally retarded in a time when little help was available. Stella became his voice and an advocate for other families facing similar circumstances. She volunteered countless hours with organizations and parent groups. Sadly, Joel passed away tragically in his late 30's, but she persevered.
Stella's will always be remembered as a woman who faced many life challenges with determination and a strong will. She was widowed in her 40's as disease took Al far too young. She carried on her life as an independent woman, living on her own until she could no longer.
She was known to all as 'Aunt Stella' and always had the last word. She was an avid gardener and had a green thumb like no other. Stella loved animals and at times had handfuls of cats and dogs. She fed all of the neighbors pets and would rescue strays off the street.
Stella's personality was strong but kind and all who knew her will remember her fondly. She will be greatly missed.
