Sylvia was a very special lady. I always loved seeing her and talking to her.
So many grandmothers are just a member of the "extended family." Not mine. Grandma was a totally integral part of my life, like a parent. There's no way to briefly describe the influence she had on my life, or the qualities that made her so beloved to me. But of all the people in my world, she made me feel better about myself than anyone else. She was my biggest champion, and she loved me and my family without reservation. Whether we were worthy of this admiration, I don't know, but I gladly accepted it!
One thing about grandma, she always believed in doing everything the right way, and keeping her belongings "just so." She was visiting us in Virginia for one of my children's birthday parties, and she noticed that, while the "viewable" surfaces in my kitchen were quite clean, the inside of my oven was filthy. This would NOT do. So hours before the party, dressed immaculately, grandma decided to open up my oven and stove and give them a good scrubbing, until it conformed to her standards of cleanliness. I didn't know you COULD lift the stove top to clean it. (Grandma always took pride in her appliances, which she owned for many decades but proclaimed they still looked "like new.") Mike and I still laugh about that story - it was quintessential grandma. Love, hard work, pride in one's home and appearance, "doing things right." Her values and lessons will live on in all of us who loved her.
