Sylvia Hanin Nexer's Obituary
NEXER, Sylvia Hanin, beloved mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on July 18th. Born on January 1, 1919, in Philadelphia, she came into the world in celebration of a new year. And, with her passing, her family and friends celebrate her life of over 98 years, in which she shared her unique bits of wisdom, displayed an almost child-like innocence in viewing the world with an open heart, embraced joy in life, and was passionate about her family.
She shared over sixty years with her cherished husband, the late Max Nexer, They left a legacy of four children: Simone David; Eileen Nexer; the late Roslyn Nexer Freeman; and Barry Nexer. She is also survived by her adored and adoring grandchildren, Richard Freeman; Adam Freeman; Sheryl David Fleishman (Scott Fleishman); Jonahan David (Laura Pena); Dr. Jeffrey Sootin; and Debbie Sootin Foley (Dan Foley). And, by her treasured great-grandchildren, Rebecca Fleischman; Zachary Sootin; Matthew Sootin; Ryan Foley; and Julia Foley. She left them with enduring memories that will be forever etched in their hearts. Also, dear to her were Maritza Mendoza and Merysole Arauz Mena, who provided loving care to her and became “surrogate daughters,” along with Nelly Vazquez, who has been a member of the family for over thirty years.
Sylvia was active in the Renanah chapter of Hadassah, serving as president for a total of 14 years, and was honored as their Woman of the Year in 2002. And, she was also a member of B’nai Brith and Ort.
Her joys were working alongside her husband in their businesses, community service, and friends. But, her passion and devotion was focused on her family. Although she will be so very missed, her love is imprinted in their hearts and souls forever. Donations in Sylvia’s honor may be made to Hadassah Greater Miami, www.hadassah.org/regions/greater-miami
