My heart goes out to Dr. Mehrel’s Family! Dr. Mehrel saved my life in 2003. Not only did he cut Stage 2 Melanoma out of my back, but he also was saddened to deliver the news of my HIV status. It crushed him more than it did me!
He always spent extra time with me - just to make sure I was doing ok. Oh, and to tell me to take it ez in the sun. I threw that right back in his face, since he had the best tan of anyone I know! All that bicycling - he said.
I remember during my surgery, (which he did the same day he diagnosed me - he said he knew I wouldn’t take him seriously and never come back) he tried to crack jokes, which all fell flat. I told him that it was his German-ness that got in the way of his delivery of the punchline. I made points with the staff, too, that day.
His compassion was limitless! Right before surgery he asked if I had insurance and I said no. He said, “Don’t worry, we will figure it out.” And HE did. I always looked forward to my 6 month and then yearly check up - just to see him and feel his warmth and genuine concern for what was happening in my life.
Dr. Thomas Mehrel - you will forever be my HERO! You are greatly missed!
