William Joseph Weiss' Obituary
William J. and Phyllis (Klein) Weiss of Charleston, SC
Married for 52 years, William J. and Phyllis S. (Klein) Weiss of Charleston, SC died within 51 days of each other. Phyllis died on March 28, 2018 after an extended illness; she was 73 years of age. Bill died on May 17, 2018 at the age of 76. Phyllis was born on January 29, 1945 to Frank and Dolly (Sherman) Klein, and raised in Baltimore, MD, where she later met and married Bill. William was born Sept 7, 1941 in New York, NY to Andrew and Stephany (Berg) Weiss. When Bill was about 10 years old, the family moved to North Miami Beach, FL, where he attended high school. After graduation, Bill went in to the Navy, and was serving in Baltimore when he met Phyllis. Their early married life soon took them to Waukegan, Ill. where their first son was born. Bill was soon after stationed in Charleston, SC, and this is where Bill and Phyllis made their home, raised their two sons, and eventually retired from their respective careers.
Bill’s career with the Navy spanned over 30 years, first as serviceman, and later as a civilian. After completing his service, he worked as a civilian at the Charleston Naval Shipyard on the overhaul of submarines. Bill retired in 1996 when the Shipyard ceased operations. Phyllis worked for many years at a local health aids company, where she found great satisfaction in assisting clients.
Bill and Phyllis are affectionately remembered for their love of family and animals. As a family, they all loved bowling, and Phyllis volunteered as a coach for both of her young sons, and later one of her grandsons. She also loved raising dogs (even coining the word "snerd" from their bloodhounds), and creating beautiful counted cross-stitch.
Phyllis and Bill are survived by their children Michael "Flint" and wife Kimberly Weiss of Maple Valley, WA, and Randy Weiss and partner Charlotte Gaskins of Columbia, SC., as well as five grandchildren; Ian and Aelyn Weiss of Maple Valley, WA, and Andrew, Gavin and Rosalyn Weiss of Columbia, SC. Private services were held in Fort Lauderdale, FL.
